Remote Gaming Law

Remote gaming has become a major contributor to Malta’s GDP and now represents a significant part of government revenue. The industry has generated substantial economic activity in Malta over the past years, particularly since the introduction of the Remote Gaming Regulations (L.N. 176 of 2004) and the upgrading of its internet cable links with mainland Europe.

Several international operators have sought to obtain a licence from the Malta Lotteries and Gaming Authority and have relocated their businesses to Malta, based on its reputation as a serious, well-regulated European jurisdiction, providing online gamers the desired degree of comfort when participating in online games.

There are four different classes of Remote Gaming Licenses that can be applied for:

  • Class 1: covering remote gaming license;
  • Class 2: covering remote betting office license or a remote betting exchange office license
  • Class 3: covering the promotion or abetting of gaming from Malta; and
  • Class 4: covering the hosting and management of remote gaming operators.

The Application process involves three separate stages and can be obtained in as little as two months from the submission of a complete application. The firm assists its clients with all licensing and compliance issues, closely co-ordinating all aspects of the application process with the Lotteries and Gaming Authority.
